UIQ "Officially" Dead - Sony Ericsson

Posted by DaMuffinMan | 23.10.08 | , , | 20 comments »

Seems like SE has finally put an end to the Symbian UIQ platform, at least according to Patrick Olson from Sony Ericsson at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London this week.

The reason cited was that it failed to attract a steady fanbase as well as not being able to be rubberstamped by network providers as the 'platform of choice' for business users. In his own words...

Or rather it didn't make it. Another oxbow lake in the mobile industry story. Sad.

The other shareholder in the UIQ platform, Motorola, abstained from making any comments.

Now that it's "official", I suppose all support from SE for these platforms will cease quite soon. Perhaps we won't ever see another firmware update for the G900/G700 and the P1?

I think the problem lies with SonyEricsson devices and NOT UIQ. I gave up my p1i for a Nokia E71.

The P1i kills me when it comes to network detection, and browsing is not a breeze. I say this after trying the Nokia S60, network detection is AHHH unbeleivable and browsing EVEN without a stylus is so much faster.

I think Nokia worked hard on making it's HArdware and S60 perfect while SE were so desperate for market share they moved to windows mobile (the worst OS ever).

    I used P800, P900, P910, P990, and P1i . . . and after all this loyalty as an IT expert, I moved to Nokia S60.

Hard luck SE, but it seems your business model is a bit shaky, and for an official to declare what he did, is ... giving up too fast. Touch screens need to be iphone like (Capacitive, not resistive) to make the device youch native, ... I mean compare the X1 and the iPhone, ... iphone touch screen capabilities will make you drop X1 in no time. Even from an originality point of view, what teh hell, X1 is WM with a spicier home screen, that's all.

I think SE will help kill WM too.

    Ciao Amigos.

was not said by Patrick Olson, from, SE, but by Steve from All About Symbian

those gsmarena retards just don´t know how to copy info from other places

By not promisising future stability+performance and especially security updates for uiq phones they undermine xperia sales too since people buying smart phones aren't dumb.
They see sony can't be trusted and windows mobile needs way bigger support since it uses very closed standards and never stable and secure as symbian. compare opera symbian forum and windows mobile forum. that is exactly same software.

This is not true. I work in SE in Lund Sweden and a new platform of UIQ4 available for new phones and support for the older ones. UIQ is better than other operating system interfaces and will be developing for yeas to come with SE

    Remember this?
    http://www.p1iblog.com/2008/03/response-to-symbian-uiq-is-slowly-dying.html

This article was right from the very beginning.

I feel sorry for those people criticized it back then by creating fake hopes for UIQ fans.
It was more that clear the last year and after the fiasco of the P990 that UIQ was slowly dying and well.. now is dead.

Too bad the put an end to this! UIQ was a nice concept, shame it didnt lead to a final product

I think it's a good thing, they should focus the energy into developing the s60 platform into something that can rival the iphones os and android.

UIQ dead, sad indeed. I actually like my P1i. A great phone. Perceive it as you like, but it had many features, and OS, and a great price. Yeah, it had some minor bugs, but nothing so major that should kill UIQ or P-series off.
