Last of the SE P1 firmware updates?

Posted by DaMuffinMan | 8.9.08 | , , | 17 comments »

I've only ever updated my firmware 3 times on my Sony Ericsson P1 - first it was the upgrade to R9H, then R9J and lastly R9K. 3 firmware updates in the space of more than a year. How's that for complete product support?

Let's compare it with another one of the older Sony Ericsson flagship products, the P990. 2 firmware updates in its entire lifespan as the flagship product. And in the end, it was hardly perfect - more like a perfectly flawed smart phone (which incidently prompted some to purchase the P1).

With the G700/G900 filling in the void which the P1 never filled, it seems unlikely that us P1 users will ever see a firmware update fixing the bugs that was always there. The M600 and the W950 were the only UIQ smartphones to receive a bundle of software updates, and the only reason was due to the fact that there were irreplaceable UIQ phones, until their successors the P1 and the W960 was released (Incidentally once the P1 and the W960 was released firmware updates for both phones were stopped). Now that the G900 and the G700 are filling in the P1's shoes, it doesn't seem likely that the P1 will ever get another firmware update.

On an additional note, I happened to pass by the Sony Ericsson customer center here in Hong Kong and upon asking for the status of the P1 and whether updates were available, the reply was "P1? I would wait for the XPERIA if I were you".

yep, i would too wait for xperia, but when i bought my P1i there were even no info about xperia... And now i want xperia for my second mobile phone, but the price is just a little to high (i could buy 3 more p1i in cost of 1 xperia %|) I hope se will relise at least 1 more firmware update...

P.S. sorry for my english, it still need a practice.

I knew there would be no further firwmares for P1 when they released G900. Not a really big surprise since we know how SE "thinks" about that. To be honest, I'm quite satisfied with my P1 and the only thing that I would want is faster GUI.

it's a shame... the p1 is such a nice phone, i use it for everything... tomtom, mgmaps, fring, gmail, torch and the walkman. iv even customized the icons...
xperia is a nice phone but ....its windows... and for some reason according to the poll ppl prefere windows, from personal experience of a windows smartphone i am put off the x1.

atleast with windows you will be able to install god knows how many cool programs on it.

SE firmware are poor and normally dont bring much new features

for example look at nokia fw update: every upadte has something new, SE is most correcting bugs (if they do so)

Nice to have you back! I've been hitting that p1iblog.com site every day hoping you return. :)

Yeh about firmwares its really disappointing that the support is equal to none.

I am not a fan of Windows Mobile, even with all that fancy stuff on top of it, it's still the same old Windows Mobile. I used a HTC Touch for a while and sold it. The Xperia looks nice but it has Windows Mobile on it :( I don't use my W960i as my first phone but it cames out of the drawer every now and again and when I do use it, it's a nice phone to use. It was my first UIQ phone although I have used S60V3 from Nokia for a few years. The best thing about the W960i is that it has that SE style to it. I hope when the Symbian Foundation gets going that SE releases some phones using it. They'll probably never have the hardware to match a Nokia equivalent one on one but I'm sure it'll have the style, and I'd buy one just for that. Heres hoping. Peace out.

    Hi all
I'm alsoa recent P1i user too. I have a Z1010 (the first 3G from SE) and a K750i as well. Each one not perfect but, for me, very very very good mobiles. I'm getting overwellmed with this P1i... However there are two issues I would like very much to SE to improove on it (as far as understand from this thread I will stand waiting and waiting...) one is the menu/options organization: too messy. The other one is the lak of Contact Groups' ringtones.
Also I dind't spent quite a lot around the SE PC Suite however I was not able to found a way of editing the Contacts/Calendar/Tasks on the PC without using the *"@~~*+ of the MS outlook... Besides that, what a fantastic piece of mobile.
As NOKIA has bought the Symbian OS is natural that SE will turn to MS what's a dam, shame OMHO.´

there is no reply to may comments dated sept 15.
its really sad that there no major upgrades for P1i.

now Nokia E71 has been released. pros and cons in relation to P1i.

pros : latest product, Symbian S60 is better than UIQ as experts say in some parts like web browser, built in GPS.

CONS : smaller screen 2.4 inch than E61i, no touchscreen.

i am going to buy the P1i in a couple of days here in india.
    should i go for it.
i want a candid opinion please

    thanks from sanjay.

    regarding comment dated 8 sept
dear thazlett .. how do u use tomtom with p1i. do u use bluetooth GPS and pair it with p1i. r there GPS instruments available. i think SE does have optional GPS bluetooth accessory. how is its performance.
earlier here in india optional GPS was available only for around us dollars 10 extra but now i think it is 20 to 30 more.

    thanks from sanjay

I read about the torch for P1i. That is amazing. But I don't know how to install it. I get the message that "A known compatibility is required for". What s this? Can I install it after all? What is the payment amount for this application?

Hi.. just wondering what font do u use in ur P1, it looks very nice! =)

  16. Anonymous // December 3, 2008 6:09:00 AM HKT

Afzal, you need to sign the application. Which is one hell of a bother to be honest.

Windows Mobile for me is a turn off... a very large one.
I am also upset about how SE is treating the P1i at this point. It's a great, reliable phone. CHEAP at the moment as well compared to other phones. What more do you want for everyday life?

Hello everyone. I posted last time for a torch application. It works fine with me. I don't remember what did I do but its one hell of an application. amazing. I just love my P1i. Its amazing. Its applications are increasing also but sadly there is going to be no update on the firmware.
