Samsung Omnia vs. Sony Ericsson P1

Posted by DaMuffinMan | 24.7.08 | , | 27 comments »

So this article marks the start of my series - moving on from the Sony Ericsson P1. I'm not sure how long I'll make the series, since new phones can more or less spring up anytime from Ericsson's competitors, but it'll span at least a few articles.

I don't really enjoy writing this (probably because I've become quite attached to my P1, it occupies a special place in my heart), but it is starting to feel aged compared to gadgets released on the market right now. I just can't seem to get around the fact that it's less that a year old too, and yet the smart phone's specifications make it seem as though its an elder standing next to the new kids of this generation.

So first up, the band support: the Omnia boasts quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, as well as 2 different HSDPA bands (one for Europe/Asia and one for America. Just to clarify, the Omnia will be released in 2 different versions for the different regions). With that said, I don't think I should bring up the connectivity options of the SE P1; it's clear which one is the winner here.

Operating System: the Omnia runs on WM 6.1 Professional, whilst the SE P1 runs on Symbian UIQ. And it seems the majority of my readers prefer the WM platform, as seen on the survey on the right hand side...I do concede that I don't have much experience using the WM platform (the last WM platform I used was WM 5 and I found it...less than satisfactory compared to Symbian), but with WM 6 getting quite a number of positive reviews it seems that it is the platform of choice, whether it being for business or multimedia.

Also, with the UIQ platform now being part of the Symbian Foundation, it doesn't seem quite likely that it'll receive the support or attention that the WM platform currently enjoys, so the Omnia has the lead over the P1 in this aspect.

Software: Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are equally as many WM apps as there are for Symbian UIQ, if not more. And because the WM marketshare is larger than UIQ, I suppose many more are free too.

Appearance: the Omnia reminds me of a certain, widely recognised icon which I need not mention. It's very streamlined, and fits nicely in one's hand. On the other hand, it lacks a physical keyboard, which is a great inhibitor for some business users or hardcore texters - nothing beats the feeling of actually TOUCHING the keys knowing that you've typed them in. With real, solid keys, if one is familiar with the keyboard style and layout, one doesn't need to look when typing. And when something goes wrong with the touchscreen, the phone is still usable until you get to the service center.

So the score is 2-1 to the Omnia. I do think the above analysis is personal preference - some users really find that a virtual keyboard is great, while others don't. I fall in the latter, and hence the narrowing of the Omnia's lead. But feel free to skip this opinion if you don't find the keyboard as a obstacle to the overall experience of the smart phone.

Memory Stick: well, it's just basically microSD vs. Sony's M2. Memory stick companies are currently planning to release 16GB memory sticks for mobile phones, so it's more or less a draw. But because there are more devices in the market supporting microSD memory sticks, prices tend to be cheaper too. Just keep that in mind.

Other hardware worth mentioning: the Samsung Omnia supports WLAN 802.11 b/g, a drastic improvement over the P1 as you can get faster speeds over the wireless network. Internal memory is also another thing - there are 2 models of the Omnia available, the 8GB version and the 16GB version, which gives it another advantage over the P1 (imagine 16GB + 32GB microSDHC! That's 48GB of music, photos, etc). Oh yes, need I mention the integrated GPS, the 3.2 inch touch screen, and an accelerometer? Throw in the 3.5mm headphone jack too; it's also part of the package.

Conclusion: I think I'm sold. And with a release date of July 2008 (later on this month), in retrospect it's about time to let my P1 go. Pitting the SE P1 against the Samsung Omnia makes it look like a grandfather.

And for those who want to know more, you can read an in depth review of the Samsung Omnia by GSMArena here.

well well well, does that mean the blog will be over? I think you'll regret it.

  2. Roderick // July 25, 2008 7:17:00 AM GMT+08:00

Why would he regret it?, all good things need to end sooner or later, pity that with the P1 was a "sooner".
I look forward to his new Omnia Blog, I'll be a reader as I was/am for this blog, as I'll be also getting an Omnia soon, I just wish that the X1 would have a bigger screen and a 5mp camera, then I'll stay with Sony-Ericsson, but well...
Oh, BTW, WM 6 is working fine and fast, I just tested in a Diamond, even if is not perfect, I like it a lot.

I don't understand your rapture for the Omnia. It is just an iPhone clone. If I wanted a cell phone with iPhone style I would buy an iPhone and not a copy.

Just to clarify a few things:

    1) No, this blog hasn't ended yet, but when it does, I'll be making a post informing everyone.

    2) SE had always been at the forefront of technology with the release of new phones (think T68i as the first with Bluetooth, the 2MP camera phones, the P910, etc). But the P1 can't really be considered a major upgrade to the P990, can it? That's probably why it can't last for more than a year.

    3) I haven't decided whether or not to purchase an Omnia, but I'm very tempted. It's got all the features of the P1, and more. I know many claim it's an iPhone clone (the appearance does resemble it) but it packs a lot more features than the iPhone does.

UIQ is dead. Gone. Nada. Out to pasture.

The P1i is going the way of the dinosaurs. This is a FACT. People seem to hate of Microsoft (and, increasingly, Apple) on principle, ignoring the fact that they're hating on them using a PC or a Mac. Ridiculous.

Looking at my P1i, I can honestly say that it had a good run, but Sony Ericsson botched it. Even using all the hacks available from various sites, it's quite obvious that it's past its sell-by date.

The Omnia-iPhone comparison is merely skin-deep. The fact of the matter is that the iPhone is really no better than the SE P990i and that, too, is dead.

Also, if we're going to hit on Samsung for pilfering its design philosophy from Apple, let's not forget that that the Sony Ericsson P800 (once upon a time Steve Jobs' favorite phone) was one of the inspirations for the iPhone. So who's really stealing from whom?

The Omnia, on the other hand, has the works: a 5Mpix camera, GPS, HSDPA data -- basically, the works. Unlike the iPhone, it's more substance than style.

In that regard, it's closer to the N96 (an AT&T representative even told an iPhone 2.0 buyer who had an N95 that it was a superior phone) that it is to the iPhone.

I just don't get these ridiculous skin-deep comparisons that Apple Fanboys are making against the Omina and HTC Touch Diamond. Stop buying Jobs' cool-aid.

You can't even say that the "coolness" of the iPhone has anything to do with Jobs' greatness; he's just lucky he hired Jonathan Ive to design his products.

So, Apple Fan-boys, if you're going to compare the Omnia with anything, compare it to the HTC Touch Diamond. Not the ridiculous iPhone 2.0. You're not in the same league. Comparing an iPhone to the Omnia is like comparing a Volkswagen to a Ferrari.

The iPhone sucks big time. I'd rather have a P1i than that piece of crap.

    Enjoy your new phone.
I can see why you're going, the P1i was a stillborn phone. I love mine, but it's fast becoming a relic.

  7. Anonymous // July 26, 2008 1:25:00 AM GMT+08:00

Does anyone think that SE will update the firmware for the P1i again?

    I have versions:

    phone: R9K009
    Organizer: R6G04
    CDA: R6A

I was hoping some of the last bugs would be fixed and I would keep mine for a while longer but now I'm ready to bury mine....

  8. Anonymous // July 26, 2008 4:44:00 AM GMT+08:00

There is one last thing SE can do and considering P1i is end-of-life it should not cost them much: open up this one platform for Linux/Android. That way they can test the waters and do so at minimal risk.

  9. Anonymous // July 27, 2008 6:37:00 PM GMT+08:00

I have several phones, including a P1i and an iPhone. After using the iPhone for several months I'm currently using my P1i again and enjoy it. It's not that bad or outdated as some claim. The keyboard is still one of the best solutions out there. The screen is clear even in bright sunlight. The cam with its 3.2 MP is very good. I give a damn about more pixels in my cell phone. The touchscreen has some advantages over the iPhone screen, using a stylus for drafts for example. So most of the P1i hardware is still more or less up to date.

The real drawback is the software. If you compare the speed and the graphics capabilities of the iPhone browser with the the P1i browser (or opera mini), the iPhone seems to come from another universe. (Wonder how the Omnia browser performs.) Also the gui feedback of the iPhone is way better. Opening the contacts, the calender or whatever works instantly, compared to the P1i where everything needs a few seconds to respond. My conclusion is: The P1i hardware (case, screen, keyboard etc.) combined with the graphics power of an iPhone would be the ultimate cell phone. Unfortunately I don't see this coming.

(For those who are triggered by the word iPhone to express their aversion against iPhone, Steve Jobs and Apple, please substitute the word iPhone in my comment against another cell phone of your choice with comparable speed and graphics power.)

why choose Samsun Omina and not consider HTC Diamond... both are running WM6.1

  11. Anonymous // August 6, 2008 10:58:00 PM GMT+08:00

You should read the conclusions in this review:

    http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?id=2606&cid=24&pg=6

Seems like a newer phone doesn't mean a faster phone.

  12. Anonymous // August 11, 2008 9:45:00 PM GMT+08:00

After reading this review i realised that once the Omnia is released it will be the best phone out .period.

i preorded mine before they sell out
